Training Course Calendar

The AQR runs a number of training courses throughout the year, open to both members and non-members. The Standard Price for all training courses includes a twelve month subscription to the AQR for the named delegate. These courses prove very popular and early booking is advised.

Residential Foundation Course

Nov 2008

The Residential Foundation course runs over 3 days and 3 nights. Designed to put theory into practise, the course will cover all the key elements of designing and running an effective qualitative research project. Delegates will work together in syndicate groups on case studies, following a series of lectures, workshops and practical exercises. This is a terrific opportunity to learn from some outstanding tutors and share your experience with your peers in the industry. The course will be designed to include a balance of lectures, discussion and workshops to reinforce learning.

Convener Joanna Chrzanowska, Genesis Consulting plus 3 experienced tutors and a guest speaker. There will also be social events in the evenings. The course will run from the evening of the first day until 4.30pm on the final day.

Foundation Course

This is an introductory course run over 5 consecutive Fridays for those with little or no experience in qualitative research. The course comprises a series of lectures combined with case study work in syndicate groups to enable delegates to put into practice what they have learnt. The course is highly participative and delegates will have the chance to carry out all the major components of a qualitative research project in their syndicate groups, guided by the course tutors.

The course conveners is Lucy Banister from The Nursery. There will also be 10 experienced tutors

Target Audience: Junior qualitative researchers with less than a year’s experience. Marketers or advertising planners who want to learn the basics of qualitative research. Research buyers who want a basic understanding of qualitative research

The course includes the following elements: Designing a research sample; Interviewing skills; Writing a discussion guide; Questioning and listening skills; Group dynamics; Projective and enabling techniques; Moderating skills; Analysing and interpreting qualitative data; Presenting research findings

Moderating Skills Workshop

May 2009

Devised and convened by Andrew Beney, Deep Blue Research, this is a 2 day non residential workshop with a lecture element, writing discussion guides and hands on moderating experience.

This course is suitable for a wide range of delegates including: Practising qualitative researchers with under one year’s experience; Quantitative researchers wishing to participate in qualitative research; Anyone wishing to become more familiar with qualitative research methods in a practical way. This course isn’t as suitable for those who: Won’t ever conduct qualitative research; Are experienced in running groups;

The course is mainly practical with some theoretical elements. Three elements will interplay to achieve delegate development: Skills will be built by seminar sessions including team work and taught elements; Skills will be practiced within the team via depth interviews and group discussions; Throughout group interaction will be used to share experiences and build confidence and skills.
